Mysore Memories - Youth Hostel Sketch

"Change is Nature"

Over the past few days (months) without a constant (even occasional) internet connection, things have been pretty different. I completed my summer internship/Practise School - 1 (part of my Engineering degree at BITS-Pilani, Goa Campus) at CFTRI, Mysore. It's one of the many CSIR Research Institute in India (hence you haven't heard of it :P). And it's been a refreshing experience, to say the least!

Anyway here's a sketch I made of the Youth Hostel, where I was staying during my Summer Internship in Mysore. Oh & this is the first Youth Hostel in India (they recently celebrated 100 years of Youth Hostels across the world!). I was living in a dorm with 12 other BITSians, and considering we have single rooms in my college, it sure was a different (== fun!) experience.

More on the Mysore trip later! (This cyber cafe's making me sick :x)

PS: Gave this sketch as a gift to someone I met at Youth Hostel. Oh & for the record, this was the view from my favorite spot in the Youth Hostel - awesome place to play flute in the night! :)

Run Chef Run - My Game for CodeChef Contest!

Been a while eh? It's been more than two months since I last posted (Ironically about one year of blogging!). For those who're still following this blog hoping for a good post, well here it is!

Coming to the point, the past few days have been pretty different. A lot of things have changed, for example the fact that I've hardly been online lately (Can't help it, I don't have net access at my Institute in Mysore, where I'm doing a Summer Internship). So I've been spending a lot of time exploring things not in the World Wide Web.

And I finally succeeded in completing one of the "10 Things to do before I die" (Okay I don't really have such a list, but I guess now is a good time to come up with one!). So well, I made a game. Yup. Yes. Yeah. (Yoyo?) Sorry to disappoint you if you were expecting something greeattt. :P

CodeChef, a Directi Initiative, offers regular coding contests (aka codejams) apart from a huge collection of practise problems which you can solve in your free time. This May, they decided to do something different, and held a Browser Based Game Contest (Flash/JS Games). I was eager to take part in it, but couldn't take out much time from my summer internship. Anyway, I made a small flash game (1 Day of Photoshop + 2 Days of Flash) and came up with this:

The game is pretty simple. You are the Chef, you need to run all the way, jump over Binary Heaps and slide under Dangling Pointers (A little too geeky names eh?). And if you notice carefully (I'm sure you didn't :P), nearly all major objects are made using TEXT/KEYBOARD Characters ONLY (Like the Trees using "#" and Mountains using "&"). Sadly gif compression really (REALLY) screws up the detailing, so maybe you should wait for a while for better graphics (yes I'll make a new version soon!).

As for those who're thinking about the code, well basically everytime you play, the Environment objects (Trees/Clouds/Mountains/Bushes) are generated at random, and so are the Enemy (Or whatever you want to call that). So sometimes it'll be a little hard to play the game and sometime you'll just be plain lucky :P

Anyhoo comments about the game are most welcome. And please don't hesitate to criticise it! (Though a little description about what's not good will be better than the more common "This is $#!T" comment :P)

Oh & not to forget, I got an "Honorable Mention" for my game! You can check out all the Winning Games at the official blog post.

Thank you CodeChef for the mention! (I get a T-Shirt too! Yipee!)

PS: If you're a student at BITS Pilani, Goa Campus, gear up as CodeChef student Chapter will be up & running next sem! (You should know that by now! :P)

Lemme know how the game was! =) ;)

Photo: Bright start to CSI IT Idol

Here's a pic that I took a while back, around 8 in the morning just outside my college. I was luckily carrying my camera, and quickly took a snap before sitting in the cab!

[Click for large view]

This was clicked when I was on my way for the Programming Round of "CSI IT Idol of Goa" (C.S.I. = Computer Society of India. I'm one of the co-founders of its chapter in our college!). Basically the contest has a written round, followed by a programming round (which I cleared last week).

Now the 10 shortlisted BE/ME/MTech students from Goa will compete in a presentation round, followed by an interview. I'm the youngest amongst the 10 I guess (other 2 selected from my college are 3rd yearites) so I'm glad I made it till this stage! I'll try my best to atleast clear the presentation round. :)

Wish me luck! :D

PS: Yes, I do have my tests going on right now. But I can blog, can't I? :D

PSS: Must I request you to comment everytime? :P

Photo: Waves Summer 2009 in 5 Pics!

It's been a week. A week since WAVES Summer 2009, the cul-fest of BITS Pilani Goa Campus got over. And wasn't it worth all the effort we put in!!

Being a core member of Controls & Event Management for Waves, I was running around most of the time. But during the little time I got, I tried to click a few pics (& ofcourse enjoy the performances!). So here are 5 pics I'll always relate with Waves Summer 2009!

The Waves Summer 2009 logo - Kudos to Arts & Deco Deptt!

Dance performance by students from PEC (Punjab) - Hats off to you guys!

The Winners of Dance competition - Jeppiar College, for 2 consecutive years!

Guest performance by the judges - Amazing Couple Dance!
I'm in love with Motion blurs! Too bad I dont have a SLR :(

The final Special Night - Performance by Rainbow Bridge. What a show!

Photo: Let there be light!

I was thinking of writing something philosophical about "Light" and moods and emotions, but I guess I should instead study for my test! :D

So here are 2 pics I wanted to share:

Another variation to the 2nd one! (Spot the difference :P)

Somehow, I've become obsessed with the sun, and it seems to reflect a lot in my pics (Remember the Republic Day Flag's pic?). These 2 pics are of my campus street lights, with the sun in the background (Not hard to figure that out eh?) Took me a couple of days to decide at which time I should click the first one :D

So how's it? Any suggestions on how to play with Sun in pics? (I'm already done with eating it or blasting it like they do in DragonBallZ) :P

Comments welcome!

PS: Sorry for the delay for the upcoming GMail post. Will complete the draft after my test! Don't forget to subscribe! :)

Sketch: Meet the Kala members - WAVES Prelude

Good news: Net's improved a lot in the past one week (compared to the day I last posted about the pathetic Internet, the net speeds have nearly doubled!). Anyway I thought maybe I should post about the other side of my campus too! Since everyone's busy working for WAVES (You don't know WAVES? Read on!), here's a sketch from my side as a "Prelude to Waves" :D

Kala, the fine-arts club of BITS Pilani Goa Campus, organizes events that aim to help others learn art, and mainly have fun while they do so (Check the sketches I made for Origami & Caricature workshop Notices!). This sem, we've increased our strength (Unlike all other clubs, Kala was an open club till now, ie. it comprised of only 6-7 core members who organized events open for all).

Anyway this isn't meant to be a intro post to Kala. So coming straight to the point, here's a sketch/caricature collection I did of all the Kala members
Coordinator: Shipra; Sub Coordi: Soumya
Core Committee: Nikhil, Sakshi, Aishwarya, Rasagy (Me! me!), Deepika
New members: Divesh, Sutirth, Akhil, Madhu, Srishti, Suchismita, Yash, Kaushal

Special thanks to my friend Bing (Also known as Abhijeet :P), who let me play with his tablet for this weekend. He's been doing some kickass artwork (Check his blog!), so I just had to do something too! :D

Not to forget, we've WAVES Summer 2009, Cultural Fest of BITS Pilani Goa Campus, coming up this March. Everyone's busy trying to make the fest a big hit, and I'm sure it's going to be awesome this time (too)! Head on to the website to know about the events, special nites and more! :)

Sadly, being a part of the Controls & Event Management for Waves, I won't get a chance to take part. But then organizing the fest is a thrilling experience too! :)

Anyway how was the sketch? Any comment/suggestions on how to improve? Do let me know by leaving a comment!! :)

Internet in BITS Pilani Goa Campus? What's that?

Long time eh? Well it’s been a hectic month already… Apart from the tests that just got over, I finally got the SPICMACAY chapter started in my campus & organized the inaugural performance by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia (Spent some time with him too… He’s amazing! _/\_) and then had Quark’09 – Technical festival of BITS Pilani Goa Campus. (Yeah that’s my college :|)

Anyway reason why I’ve been away isn’t either of the above. It’s because BLOGSPOT had been banned in my campus for apparently no reason. Our network admins are known for blocking random keywords (Design, Firefox, Game, Girl, Manchester, Analysis….) , but banning blogspot was just too much. After trying for some 10 days, I finally got a few of these unblocked. So now we can read blogs (Go read about the changes to Gmail Contacts!), surf Designer sites (Saw the Photoblogs@Smashing?), go to the FireFox homepage, and look for websites with Analysis in it.

Sounds too good to be true eh?

Here’s what the net admins did now: They’ve set a limit to the maximum size of the webpage you can load. Great!! So the Wikipedia entry on "BITS Pilani", greets me by the message: “The request or reply is too large.” Ditto with the official BITS Pilani Goa Campus website, or the BITSAA website (That's maybe the only reason why our Campus can survive - The BITS Pilani Alumni). Oh & don’t even dream of opening something like DesignShard (This time, it's not because it has ‘Desi’ in it :X)

That’s not it. Pages now load without half the images (Like AlexBuga's Site or Tutorial9). Formatting of some sites is completely screwed (Smashing Mag & Our very own Waves site for example). And Sourceforge.net, Orkut, Facebook, Picasaweb, Newsgator, Youtube, Metacafe & Game Development websites (XNA related) are a few of those hundred other websites that are still blocked.

Sad part is, people in the campus don’t really care about this. I’m tired of getting things changed for those who just sit and play CS/Dota in their rooms and abuse Net admins but can’t go upto the authorities to complain. What's the point? I guess I’ll just go & sit in CSD and surf net unrestricted instead of going around getting keywords unbanned. :-/

PS: My mood changed from “I hate this campus” to “Yey my blog’s unbanned” and back to “Great. So now half of Wikipedia is banned. I still hate this campus” in a span of an hour.

PPS: For those who care, Webpage size of Google is 11606 bytes; My blog is 342357 bytes; BITSAA Website is 365549 bytes; BITS Website is 595399 bytes. Check it out yourself!

PPPS: Now that I can post, I have a few sketches & (Yet another) BIG Gmail Tips compilation (New ones!) coming up very soon, so do subscribe to my blog if you haven’t. :D

Photo: Life keeps getting better!

After a hectic week (and a pleasant weekend), I sat down thinking about the upcoming week. The things to be done, the deadlines to be met...

This weekend was amazing. I spent a day at Palolem beach with my friends and on Sunday I watched the BITSal (Futsal Championship in BITS Pilani, Goa Campus) Semi & Finals (My friend(s) Anuj & JD's Team won! Yoyo!)

One of the thoughts that hasn't left my mind has been of the way something more & more interesting keeps happening. Be it a Kala workshop (Remember the sketches I made for Origami & Caricature Workshops?) or a visit to a beach (Goa \m/). There's so much to this life that you can't just say that you've had enough.

Anyway, here are two pics that I clicked on my way to the Palolem beach:

Don't Stop!

I don't know why, but I really liked this pic. The cycle-wala was driving slowly, in a care free manner. I just got a moment to click him, as we sped past him. He just moved to the side and continued driving slowly...

It's a long way to go...

I've always loved the view you get while you travel in Goa. Unlike Delhi, the roads here are empty (and greener!). I feel like keeping this as my wallpaper :)

Anyway next week is going to be fun... There's Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia's performance and then 3 days of QUARK'09 - Technical fest of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus.

As I said, life keeps getting better!

PS: Expect more pics (Remember 'India Shining?') from now on! Don't forget to subscribe to get instant updates!

Sketch: Origami Workshop by Kala

Kala is the Fine-arts club of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus. A lot of workshops, competitions etc. are held by Kala to promote art in the campus. Apart from the traditional Sketching Workshops & Painting Competitions, Kala also organizes different (& fun!) events like Blind Art & Caricature Workshop.

This Friday, Kala's organizing an Origami Workshop, which is being taken by Akhil Oswal. Even though he's a student of our own college, he has been teaching Origami for a few years and it'll be fun to rediscover our childhood again!

I enjoy sketching notices for such workshops (Last time I made a caricature of Barack Obama for the Caricature Workshop). So here's a part of the notice I made for the Origami Workshop!

Pen Sketch for Origami Workshop

PS: Akhil actually showed us a 1-foot tall Origami Dragon, hence I sketched that too!

So how's the sketch? And have you tried Origami before?

Oh & if you're a BITSian, do pre-register for the workshop. It'll be fun!! ;)

Photo: India's Shining...

Happy Republic Day!!

Thanks to Angad Singh Gill, one of my seniors, I've started clicking photos in my free time! He's been teaching me some new tricks & I'm trying to make the best use of my Digicam (Finally convinced my parents to get it to campus!).

Here's a pic I took today evening. Taken using a simple Sony DSC-W35 at 5MP & cropped using Picasa (No editing done otherwise) :)

How's it?? Any suggestions on different styles I could try & click (For example, I'm trying out Smoke Photography inspired by Smashing Mag!)

Oh & yes, Happy Republic Day again!

Sketch: Goodbye seniors!

Another sem passed, and what followed was something I always hate doing - Saying Good bye. Half of the 4th year batch, said good bye to the campus, and will be now heading for PS (PS=Practise School, ie. Internship).

This batch has been the most talented one till now, responsible for starting nearly every big club/deptt (and making other things BIG!) I got a chance to work with some of the best people I've ever met, and they'll always continue to inspire me.

Anyway switching from the "senti" mood, here's a sketch of the two seniors I'll miss the most, Vandith Bhaiya & Manasa Di. (I had to settle for a digital version after ruining a pen sketch :X) Both were members of the Waves Organizing Committee, and have taught me much more than just organizing a fest.

A few other seniors who are leaving are Piyush (Waves), Abhinav Lakhotia (Waves), Upneet (Drama), Parsani aka Chief (Spons) and Aditya Rao (Spons).
A formal Farewell was given last year to the whole batch (And I wrote about a few of them in my Farewell post), and now they'll be off to different parts of India (And abroad) for their PS.

Best of luck to all of you! Will miss you!

Sketch: Tired

"And so he sat down, tired,
Still lost in that thought,
Of what he won in this war,
And what all, he had lost."

If you've been seeing my sketches for a while, you must've figured the difference in the style. I made it using a Pen Tablet!! :D

Yup, I got my hands on one of my dream tools (though only for some time) - an iBall Pen Tablet that can be attached to my laptop. Thanks alot to Sai for lending it to me for a day (It's exam time, so he wasn't using it :D)

Oh and for those who are wondering why the theme is similar to one of my old sketch, well the "inspiration" is the same :|

PS: Idea taken from someone's deviantArt Gallery. Campus net won't let me open deviantArt, so well, thanks whoever you are! ;)

Comments welcome!

Sketch: Thank you Adil Sir!

From what I've learnt this sem, Designing is an art. You can't teach anyone Designing, you can only inspire one to learn it. And this sketch is for someone who knew how to do that best!

Adil Mistry, BITS Pilani Alumni (Graduated in 1979), teaches Multimedia at Central TAFE, eCentral Campus, East Perth, Australia. That's all I knew about him when he came to BITS Pilani, Goa Campus to do his sabbatical by taking up the Creative Multimedia elective. Though I was very keen to take the course (As I've always been weak at the Designing part), I wasn't enrolled (As I posted before, stupid Campus rules - Only for 3rd/4th yearites :|). But after attending the first class, the whole I'm-not-enrolled-so-shouldn't-attend syndrome vanished. * Poof *

From learning basics of designing, to watching animation (& scary) movies, to trying cool effects in Adobe Premiere, I had fun in every class :D

Anyway, after a short farewell dinner (a day before), Adil Sir left today. So I decided to give him a small sketch just to thank him for inspiring us all! :)

Sketch for Adil Mistry Sir by Rasagy Sharma aka RaSh

Who knows, I might end up being a Designer! (Would love too :D) I'll make sure I remember whom to credit my success then!

We'll miss you Sir!

PS: Now that I look at it, I feel I should not hate a ruler so much! :P

Caricature: Barack Obama!

Note: Yoy! My blog just crossed 8,000 hits!! Thanks to everyone who's been checking it regularly!

On Saturday (15th November), I organized a Caricature Workshop in our campus (On behalf of Kala, the Fine-arts club of our campus). Caricatures are different from sketches as they tend to exaggerate some particular part of the sketch/figure. Mr. Naguesh Sardesai, popular Cartoonist & Caricature artist, helped us understand the basics of Caricature & Cartoons.

Here's a caricature I made for the notice (My first Caricature :D). The concept was (shamelessly :|) taken from Jit's amazing blog. So if you like this caricature, I'm sure you'll love his work!!

Caricature of Barack Obama made by Rasagy Sharma aka RaSh
So here's Barack Obama for you!

Liked the sketch? Any comments? Would love to hear from you!

Looking back at Oasis '08

Oasis '08, the cultural fest of BITS Pilani, was held from to 20th to 24th Oct. One of the biggest cultural fest in India, Oasis had events ranging from the conventional Fashion Parade & Solo Singing to new events like Street Dance & Hindi Jam! But the main USP of Oasis is the fact that it is 96 hours of absolute fun. And 96 hours MEANS 96 hours. Yes they had DJs playing till 7 in the morning!

Before I bore you with more text, here's the main part: I came 1st in Bull's Eye 2nd in Black & White. Here's the sketch we made:

Sketch made by RaSh for Oasis - Theme - Emotions

The theme was "Emotions", and we depicted different emotions (Punjabi - Happy, Soldier - Suspicious, Muslim - Angry, African - Enslaved) that are there inside each of us.

Oh & BITS Pilani, Goa Campus came overall first, beating Hansraj College (DU) by a huge margin! \m/

The reason I didn't post before was mainly due to my Tests, and also because I wasn't sure what to post. Oasis was a great learning experience for me. Be it dramatics, art or just organizing the fest, I learnt a lot of things, but I wasn't sure how to actually jot them down. Anyway here's a short post on my experiences, and what all I learnt :)

The Campus:

In the middle of a village, there's the huge BITS campus. Before you enter the campus area, everything around is just like another village (I could recall my visit to Punjab some 7 years back). First, you just DON'T make a campus wherever you want. The 6 hour journey from Delhi to Pilani was a pain. And think about the students.. they've got nothing to do outside the campus :(

But then, the huge campus has everything. From loads of restaurants to a telephone exchange, the campus is more like a old town than a college campus. You'll find students and workers roaming around on cycles, roadside vendors selling "Shikanji" (aka Nimbu pani aka Lime Juice) and the old buildings about to crumble down. The campus gives you the vintage feeling (Remember Connaught Place in Delhi? They've their own "C'Not" with a couple of restaurants  and other daily use shops)!

Lesson: If your campus is in the middle of nowhere, make sure it atleast has huge space, 1 temple, 5 restaurants, random statues on each turn, weird names for each hostel (and lane), some place to eat every 100 metres... And ofcourse, have cycles and Auto-Rikshaws (You can't walk all day right?)

The Climate:

The climate forces you to think how people actually survive there. I mean in the afternoon, it's scorching hot and at midnight you can't sleep without a kambal. The worst part is that if you sleep at 3 in the morning, you'll be shivering when you fall asleep, and sweating when you wake up at 9 in the morning. It's annoying. Very annoying. But I guess BITSians adjust to it soon (Yeah ask us about adjusting!)

Lesson: Just because every other girl around you is wearing shorts doesn't mean it's warm. Especially when it's 2 in the morning.

Oasis'08:

This year's theme was "Unio Mystica" (Please Google it. I'm too lazy). It's funny how people choose themes (I guess they ran out of conventional themes after a few years). The downside of such a theme is that no one (Including the participants AND the organizers) have a clue about what the theme means, so you hardly find anything related to the theme during the whole fest.

Another remarkable thing about Oasis'08 was the number of events. There are too many events! And apparently, they don't have any body to regulate which event to be kept and which not to be kept, so eventually you have 3-4 similar events (For ex, there were some 4 events related to advertising, and other events also had the same "Ad making" rounds. Why keep same events with different names?). Secondly, too many events means most of the smaller events are ignored. More on that later.

Lesson: When keeping obfuscated themes, make sure the organizers know what it means. Or keep it so abstract that no one cares.

Inauguration:

The inauguration was on the first day in the Auditorium. Now the Audi is pretty small (compared to ours), and has a seating capacity of some thousand students (max) I guess. Now the funny thing the organizers did was to reserve nearly ALL SEATS for different BITSian clubs & deptt. This meant that the out-station participants were expected to either sit in the last row, or stand, or sit on the floor, or just leave. The "Firewallz" wasn't cooperative at all, and Pilani students didn't really care about the out-station students sitting on the floor. Eventually, most of my friends left and I stood for some 3 hours to watch the Inaug. But after some initial "formalities", the culturals were great. Worth the effort!

Lesson: Ever heard of the saying "Atithi devo bhav"?? Remember that when organizing a fest. :|

The Crowd:

This is one thing that covers up for anything and everything that might go wrong at Oasis. They get a huge crowd from Delhi (Most of the Delhi University students are there), and these people don't give a damn about the organizing. Give them a DJ, couple of good food stalls, and a chance to roam around all night. They'll be more than happy. And a happy crowd == successful popular fest.

Lesson: The dumber the crowd, the less they'll care about the events. All they need is the "festive mood", and voila! Your fest is a big hit!

Events:

Being a part of the Core committee of Controls of Waves (Cultural Fest, BITS-Pilani, Goa Campus), I thought I would be able to learn how to organize a fest, from shortlisting events to scheduling them. Turns out I learnt more about how not to organize a fest, with the controls doing a bad job throughout the fest. Or maybe I was expecting too much from the "established" cultural fest. Ofcourse Waves wasn't perfect, and I agree that no fest can go perfectly smooth. But..

  • You don't keep loads of events just to make a huge total. It's crazy going through the Rulebook again & again for every event.

  • If you do, you make sure every event has a good organizing team. Or atleast someone who knows what the event is.

  • The Rulebook is meant to explain the event, from the general description to basic rules. You just DON'T make an error in it (One of the event had timings as 1.5 hours Writing + 0.5 hours judging. Turns out it's an art event!)

  • Rulebook isn't just for the participants. Maybe the organizers should have a look at it too. That way, you don't make a fool out of yourself when participants quote the Rulebook.

  • You don't keep events "Subject to participation". If you are unsure about the turnout, don't have it. Atleast don't call judges, ask people to participate and then cancel the event as there were too less participants.

  • Eliminations for an event should be a bit related to the event. For ex, you don't eliminate people on the basis of how humorous they are (How do you judge that anyway?) for a Hindi JAM. You don't need to be humorous to win a JAM. (JAM == Just a Minute)

  • If there's an event, you should try and get some audience for it too right? Ever heard of something called Publicity? Why have an event in an LT with only 10 people (= Organizers + Participants)?? The JAM (aka BLAB) was held in the Audi, with only 20 people watching it. :(

  • Change in timings is unavoidable. But you atleast make sure it is conveyed to maximum people. What's the point of "preponing" Street Dance and eventually doing it with hardly any audience?

  • The basic rule of scheduling is to avoid events from clashing. If it's not possible, atleast don't clash two events of the same category! Our Quiz team went to Finals of one event, but had to leave it as another Quiz started just then (They finally won the latter though!)

That's all that I can think of for the moment. Must say it was a great learning experience! :)

PS: I've been pretty harsh while writing this post. Mainly because it's not meant to praise the fest but to find out the shortcomings so that they can be avoided in future. More like "Notes to self". So don't flame me explaining how great Oasis was, coz even I agree that it was a great fest!

Who'll be the next Microsoft Student Partner?

Update: I've been selected as a Microsoft Student Partner!! Check out the new post to know more :)

How many times have you glanced at a Google Product and said, "Oh it's by Google. Let's check it out!” How many times have you turned away from an application just because it's from Microsoft? Today, there's a growing trend of "Anti-Microsoft" feeling amongst most of the tech-enthusiasts. They'll blindly buy an Apple product, but ask them anything about Microsoft and they'll start making faces. And to an extent, Google & Apple have managed to draw attention thanks to their revolutionary products, but somehow a lot of amazing Microsoft application are not even known to people (Take MS Office OneNote for example. I never cared to look at it till now, but once I did, I realized what an awesome product I'd been missing!)

I guess this gave a hint to the smart minds running Microsoft that something needs to be done. There wasn't anything wrong with their products, what was needed was to make sure people atleast try it out once before checking some other vendor. And here comes the concept of Microsoft Student Partner.

MSP are selected from different colleges, mainly to try and make their college peers aware about different MS products. Products which are better than the ones they are currently using, but never cared to try out, maybe just because of the common notion to under-estimate Microsoft. And the selection test was held this Sunday (19th Oct) in 8 cities across India to choose the next MSPs.

I and few of my friends were shortlisted for the test, and I went to the Delhi center (As I was leaving for Pilani to participate in Oasis). And nearly half of those in the Delhi center (More than 75 students) were from BITS Pilani! A short introductory session made us more familiar with what MSPs are, what benefits they get by being one and what they are expected to do. And then we went for the written eliminations.

The written test was of 4 parts (of nearly equal questions). First one was on Logical Reasoning, with simple puzzles like in any IQ test, and a section having excerpts from a technical article/news items and questions based on it. This was followed by a test to judge Analytical Ability, in which you had to use the statistics provided (Bar graph of Sales, Details of Bus timings etc.) to answer the questions.

Next, we had to technical papers. One was on C Programming, which was pretty simple (except for some questions based on syntax and header files which you need to mug up to answer). The last paper was the weirdest of all, as it had high level technical questions (some about how data is sent in a network, memory architecture and what not!). Thank god there was no negative marking!! :D

Some 40-50 students were shortlisted from the 200-300 present, and were grouped for GDs. Sadly, I had a couple of 3rd years in my group, and they turned out to be pretty good at GDs. We got the topic as "Relevance of Internet in Rural Areas in India" and the ten of us started thinking about what to speak. But what was disappointing in the GD was the contrast in experience of the participants. One of them was very dominating, where as some 1st yearites were actually quarrelling, instead of letting others speak. Unable to understand what's going on in this fish market, the Observer finally asked everyone to speak one by one, and then asked the dominant participant to conclude (Sadly, she didn't conclude the GD. She just concluded what she was saying). And well, that was it.

The results are expected around 28th Oct 1st Nov, and I'm a bit doubtful about my selection, thanks to the chaotic GD. In the other center, Rahil & Sudipt from BITS Pilani Goa Campus got through for the GDs. Let's see if we get a MSP in our college!

Anyway, I took this opportunity to talk about getting some Microsoft guys to do a presentation/guest lecture etc in our campus, under CSI (Computer Society of India, BPGC Chapter). Hopefully, you'll see a notice soon with the Microsoft logo \m/. Oh & if there's any particular topic you would like to have a lecture/workshop on, do tell me!

So what do you feel about this whole Microsoft Student Partner idea? Do you feel it'll be able to reduce the "Anti-Microsoft" feeling which is there among a lot of students today? Do leave a comment!

Zephyr '08 - BITSians Fight it out!

Zephyr '08, the Intra-campus Cultural, Technical & Sports Fest of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus, concluded this Sunday. 13 Hostels (11 Boys + 2 Girls) fight out for 4 days to emerge as the winner, with events like Fashion Parade, Dance Duo, Solo Singing, T-Shirt Designing, Contraption, Tug of War etc. Last year, CH1 (My hostel), came 2nd, closely beaten by CH4 (one of the girls hostel). This time, it was the other way round, with CH1 beating CH4 (Even though there is a huge advantage on CH4's side. Guess what :P ) Anyway we still managed with some 3000 5400 points, and beat CH4 with a difference of 25 points :D I took part in 4 events, and here are the results: (Click on the Event name to know more!) Rasagy Sharama aka RaSh playing The Joker from Dark Knight in Zephyr '08 Mock TalkShow : 1st Prize (With Betting)
Participants are given different personalities, and they need to give a 1 minute monologue followed by a TalkShow round. I got THE JOKER (Dark Knight) and had Nikhil Samuel to help me get the make up. And that Nikhil is AWESOME!! Apart from me, the finalists were Bobby Darling (By Nishant), Gabbar Singh (By Ishan V), Jim Carey (Dhairya), Lalu & George Bush. Nishant came second, missing the first spot by just 1 mark, followed by Lalu. It was fun, but sadly no one took the Video. :(
Spot Sketching : 1st Prize (With Betting)
In a team of 2, participants have to sketch one by one and the second one has to merge the first one's sketch. Both are given different themes. Me and Nikhil took part and I got "Life in Heaven" as my theme. Nikhil was then given "Life in Hell" as the theme and he merged both amazingly, with a great sketch (He's god at sketching). And we won! :)
Codatholon : 1st Prize
This was the most unexpected (And I guess i'm as proud about winning this, as I'm of my Joker performance). First round was on Herbert, where you need to design the most optimized algorithm to cover all white spots (It has its own language, using L,R,S (Straight) and recursive functions). Second round had 2 C++ questions. What made this victory special was the fact that I beat 4th & 3rd yearites, including Rohan Anil & Rakesh, who are head of Free Open Source Softwares & Networking of CSD (Center of Software Development) respectively. Infact Rohan Anil went for Google Summer of Code this vacation, and beating him was the best feeling ever!
Street Play : 2nd Prize
A bit weird, but I still feel we didn't deserve the 2nd prize. We completed writing the script an hour before event, got ourselves the last slot and made it just in time for our chance. And still managed to come 2nd (Though I felt AH5 were much better.. Saw a bit of their performance).
Rasagy Sharam aka RaSh in Street Play in Zephyr'08 Here's me (Center), Sudarshan (L) & Rituj in a scene. Sitting from L to R: Pao, Parag, Doodie, Salil
In total, I earned some 1,675 points for CH1 :D This was more of a self praising post (Come on, I can do that once a while right?) Anyway how was your experience of Zephyr? If you aren't from BITS, then do comment about your college fests...!! ;)
