Internet in BITS Pilani Goa Campus? What's that?
Long time eh? Well it’s been a hectic month already… Apart from the tests that just got over, I finally got the SPICMACAY chapter started in my campus & organized the inaugural performance by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia (Spent some time with him too… He’s amazing! _/\_) and then had Quark’09 – Technical festival of BITS Pilani Goa Campus. (Yeah that’s my college :|)
Anyway reason why I’ve been away isn’t either of the above. It’s because BLOGSPOT had been banned in my campus for apparently no reason. Our network admins are known for blocking random keywords (Design, Firefox, Game, Girl, Manchester, Analysis….) , but banning blogspot was just too much. After trying for some 10 days, I finally got a few of these unblocked. So now we can read blogs (Go read about the changes to Gmail Contacts!), surf Designer sites (Saw the Photoblogs@Smashing?), go to the FireFox homepage, and look for websites with Analysis in it.
Sounds too good to be true eh?
Here’s what the net admins did now: They’ve set a limit to the maximum size of the webpage you can load. Great!! So the Wikipedia entry on "BITS Pilani", greets me by the message: “The request or reply is too large.” Ditto with the official BITS Pilani Goa Campus website, or the BITSAA website (That's maybe the only reason why our Campus can survive - The BITS Pilani Alumni). Oh & don’t even dream of opening something like DesignShard (This time, it's not because it has ‘Desi’ in it :X)
That’s not it. Pages now load without half the images (Like AlexBuga's Site or Tutorial9). Formatting of some sites is completely screwed (Smashing Mag & Our very own Waves site for example). And Sourceforge.net, Orkut, Facebook, Picasaweb, Newsgator, Youtube, Metacafe & Game Development websites (XNA related) are a few of those hundred other websites that are still blocked.
Sad part is, people in the campus don’t really care about this. I’m tired of getting things changed for those who just sit and play CS/Dota in their rooms and abuse Net admins but can’t go upto the authorities to complain. What's the point? I guess I’ll just go & sit in CSD and surf net unrestricted instead of going around getting keywords unbanned. :-/
PS: My mood changed from “I hate this campus” to “Yey my blog’s unbanned” and back to “Great. So now half of Wikipedia is banned. I still hate this campus” in a span of an hour.
PPS: For those who care, Webpage size of Google is 11606 bytes; My blog is 342357 bytes; BITSAA Website is 365549 bytes; BITS Website is 595399 bytes. Check it out yourself!
PPPS: Now that I can post, I have a few sketches & (Yet another) BIG Gmail Tips compilation (New ones!) coming up very soon, so do subscribe to my blog if you haven’t. :D

Looking Ahead - Help me out!!
Finally, I've crossed 10,000 blog hits! So thanks a lot to each and everyone who has been visiting my blog!
Started in April'08, this blog was a playground for me to revise (& improve) my Web designing skills. But seems like that took a back seat, and the Digit Article has motivated me to start writing more tech-articles. Hence the few Product reviews & GMail Tips. I'm happy I haven't stopped sketching though, something I still enjoy doing.
You might be wondering why I'm so much into Blogging, so what's better than quoting straight from ProBlogger!
"The experience of starting a blog and watching yourself progress is something money cannot buy... So never forget, that the journey of becoming a blogger is more important than the end product!"
Have a glance at Justin Wright's (full-time blogger and internet marketer) full post on the 5 Valuable Lessons You Can Learn From Blogging!
Anyway now that I'm less busy, I'm planning to work on my blog. And here's where your role comes!
Help me out! Tell me what you've liked/hated about this blog, things you never looked at (Like the Technorati link on the left side :P). Posts that you've not cared to read, or posts that you've checked again & again...
I already plan to implement some changes, like:
- Improving Feeds, using Feedburner (For those lazy guys who don't won't open the blog regularly!)
- Getting a more personalized theme (The green curved boxes don't really match with the content, right?)
- A Navbar, easier way to navigate through the blog (So that you don't go: 'Umm now what?')
What else? Any sort of criticism is most welcome! Whether it's your first visit to this blog, or the 100th visit, I would love to hear your views/suggestions.
Go ahead! Shoot!

Feed me, Google Reader!
This post is basically about Feeds & Google Reader. I've been blogging (Not on a Personal Blog though) for a long time (Check my Profile and see!), and earlier the most difficult thing was to stay updated with the recent posts (And to make sure your readers read posts too.) Since not everyone was interested in opening the blog everyday, posts generally would be left unread for a long time. And then came Feeds!
I'm guessing you know what Feeds are (Also read about RSS on Problogger). In simple terms, "They keep you in touch with the latest changes in a dynamic page". Now to use it, just subscribe to a feed. Ever noticed an Orange colored "Radio Signal" next to the url in the address bar in Firefox? Click and you can subscribe to my Blog feed! It'll appear as a folder inside your Bookmarks Folder with links to the latest posts.
- Adding Subscription: Just Click on the option, enter the Url of the blog, and you are done! Also, you can just type keywords to search for public feeds (EPL? Latest Google Updates? Cooking Tips?). Alternatively you can bookmark a "Subscribe" button, clicking which will Subscribe you to the current page (Blog/Site) you are viewing (If it has Feed Support that is!). To do this, go to Settings > Goodies and then drag the button to your Bookmark Toolbar.
- Using Feeds: You can easily Rename the feeds & categorize them using Folders. Also, you can "Star" selected posts or "Share" them with other friends in your contact list (Or add a widget to show them on your blog!)
- Reading Feeds: A very nifty feature is that each post that you read (ie. scroll by) is automatically marked read. This way you can just glance through the "All Items" Section everyday, scroll past boring posts and open those which you like (And then comment on them too!)
- Notes: Everything you read might not be a blog. Sometimes you might like some random webpage and would like to keep it for reference. Though that's what Bookmarks are for, you can also do it through Google Reader. Just drag the "Add as Note" Button as a Bookmark, and add Notes to sites while browsing!
- Offline: Yes! You can set your Google Reader to download feeds which you can read later without being connected to the net. Helps when you are in a campus like BITS with high-speed Internet :P
So do use Google Reader (Or whichever Aggregator you prefer), but do let the writer know you read the post! ;)
PS: I would also like to inform my fellow BITSians that our beloved Dr. T. C. Goel, Director, BITS Pilani, Goa Campus, is no more. May his soul rest in peace.

Recent Deviations
*Update: It was an honor to have Dr. Rahul Banerjee, (CS & IS Deptt, BITS Pilani) comment on our project. Thank you Sir!
- Star Rating: Yes! Now readers can rate each post and see how others thought about it. Soon there'll be a place to easily view the most Popular (And the least?) post... And to add it, visit Official Post. And you can always ask me if you have some problem implementing it (Or if it doesn't show up at all!)
- Embedded Comments Form: Unless you've used WordPress, you won't know much about it. This feature allows you to post a comment while reading the whole post, instead of leaving the page and opening a silly white (and blue) page to post them. Try it out by pressing on the link to comments (aka Thoughts on my Blog) below the post! And to add it, visit Official Post. And also for your help, there's a post by Amanda on BloggerBuster explaining it in detail :)
- Import/Export Blog: This one's especially for my friends who like pressing the "Delete Blog" Button very often. Now you can Export all your posts (& comments) and tranfer them to a new blog (Or just keep for backup). Read up on it here: Official Post.
- New Post Editor: Though most of you don't really care, Blogger has finally heard us all crying about Tables not appearing properly in our posts. So here's a new and refined Post Editor!

Blog Creation
Well, not any longer. With so many people here already blogging, I thought why not me? At the moment I'll mainly write about random stuff that happens here in BITS Pilani, Goa Campus, where I'm studying right now. Also not to forget new sketches & a bit of tech stuff if i really feel like writing.
Your comments are most welcome! Will try and update atleast once a week!
Have a great time!
RaSh
